UKZN Students Highly Sought After
Students from the UKZN College of Law and Management Studies are highly sought after by the legal and business fraternity.
This was evident when over 35 corporates, including blue chip companies, attended the Annual Employers’ Careers Exhibition hosted by the College’s Student Support Services Unit on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses on 25 and 26 July respectively.
Ms Aliya Vaid, College of Law and Management Studies’ Student Support Services Manager, said the careers’ exhibition was an annual initiative prior to the merger but with the College reorganisation, it focused on careers related to Law and Management Studies students - it is a platform for prospective employers to engage with UKZN students. ‘The attendance by corporates has increased by 10.5 % this year with new companies such as Woolworths, Truworths and Conlog participating for the first time since inception (of the exhibition). These new partners have added variety to the choice of companies available to students,’ said Vaid.
Truworths Area Manager, Ms Carmel Samuel, unpacked careers in the fashion industry. ‘We are looking for graduates who are innovative, ambitious and who thrive on challenges to join our team,’ she said.
Students were amazed at fascinating fashion career options such as Fashion Planning, Fashion Buying, Procurement, Risk Analysis and Information Systems. Samuel encouraged students to apply online for the cutting-edge training programmes with opportunities to travel the world in search of trends in fashion.
BCom Supply Chain Management students, Ms Slondile Masikane and Ms Thobeka Zungu, enjoyed interacting with Ms Tsietso Mafoso, HR Management Trainee from RCL Foods, as she gave them advice on the importance of preparing a professional CV that will stand out to prospective employers.
Many students were bowled over by a high-end fun virtual reality tour of the state-of-the-art Standard Bank offices located in Rosebank, South Africa, while Mr Reven Jackpersadh, Analyst at Standard Bank’s Cards and Payments Department, spoke about various graduate recruitment programmes including internships, vacation work, summer schools and bursaries.
It was also pleasing the see UKZN alumni, Mr Philani Msweli and Mr Thasvir Hiralall, coming back as Software Developers for 2Cana Solutions with the aim to recruit graduates for their employer. Msweli is currently pursuing an Honours degree in Computer Sciences and IT at UKZN.
National Treasury, SA Auditor General, Mr Price, Johnsons Workwear, Procter and Gamble, SAB Miller, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Mass Mart were some of the other exhibitors in attendance who were pleased with the turnout, which enabled more student interaction.
